Heartfelt Godhood

Kamichu is a delightful slice of life comedy centered around a Junior High School student, Yurie, who becomes a god. It kind of has a Spirited Away feel to it, in that there are lots of gods and spirits. However, there is a much more relaxed pace, and more of a feeling of being happy with a slow uneventful life, whether you be a girl or a god. The problems for Yurie run the gamut from saving Martians to trying to talk to the boy she likes. It is both a humorous and heart warming series.

The animation for the show is solid with well designed characters and environments. The variety and uniqueness in the design of the various gods and spirits is also excellent. The gods generally have an appearance and feel appropriate to what they are, and this goes a long way in helping the show stay fresh visually, and also lets the visuals help to create a bit of the air to the series.

The soundtrack is definitely above average. The OP is quite catchy, and the background music is generally solid, and appropriate. None of the tunes really jump out at you, but neither do they get in the way. It is not a soundtrack of Bebop quality, but it certainly has its own merits.

Kamichu is an excellent show. It may not have much action, and it isn't roll on the floor hilarious, but it creates a warm feeling in your heart, and I think makes the world a little bit better. Probably not for everyone but it's atleast worth a rental, because there is a chance you could fall in love with it.
