To begin. Please review my comments on Spicy Marmalade regarding this series. GUNDAM fans, be forewarned, I may not approve of it, but I'm sorta one of those people that hates on GUNDAM fans in the way that you probably hate on people like me. It's just the nature of the nerd world I think. We're all a little pretensious in our own right I suppose. That said, let me tell you my thoughts on GUNDAM SEED.
I was right. The animation is REALLY pretty. Especially considering it was 2002. I understand that once we hit that millenium mark, animation technology really kicked it up, but my main reason for wanting to watch GUNDAM SEED (Ok so I wanted to watch SEED Destiny, but you gotta start from the beginning apparently) was how pretty it always looked when I would see scenes or screen captures. Honestly, I'd never really had any reason for wanting to watch GUNDAM, other than thinking that the animation (particularly the way the characters were drawn, but also the sharpness of the GUNDAMS and the coloration used) was great. I'll also say that at the time of writing this I'm only 3 episodes in to an EXTREMELY long series. Hopefully I can make the time to watch more of it, because it's starting to intrigue me in a way.
Ok, so again, I don't know anything about GUNDAM. I know that the names Heero and Duo are tossed around a lot. But they aren't in this series. Which is fine, but I like the way that Heero is drawn, so maybe sometime I'll have to look in to something that he's in. But for now, we have this guy. Kira Yamato. He seems like your typical "I'm the only one that can pilot this thing but I'm 14 and I don't want to" main character. I suppose I'd expect no less of them...no giant robot anime has ever let me down in that department before. Kira is cool though, because he's a smartass. And he can hack and program stuff. Which makes him better. I don't know why, but I've been watching it in English (I expected the dub to suck, but it's actually really good), so I get a much better feel for his sarcastic, I'm-better-than-all-of-you-and-this-is-bullshit attitude. I like it. The other thing is that a lot of the characters say really funny stuff. And it's probably not MEANT to be funny, but when you take it out of context or say it out loud....it's really funny. See the quotes page for some of that stuff.
The only other thing I can really say at this time (since I STILL have no real idea what's going on) is that I'm intrigued by the foreshadowed story of Kira (who fights for the Earth side) and his childhood friend Athrun Zala (Who fights for the ZAFT side). Apparently Kira is a Coordinator (as opposed to a Natural), and pretty much the Coordinators all fight for the ZAFT side. But Kira is fighting for Earth, and this means that he has to keep facing his friend. There's potential for some FANONICAL Shounen-Ai in this relationship, but until I get more background I don't know. I'll just say that for now I'm intrigued.
I need to watch more of this. I'm still not sure if I LIKE it or not.....it's taking a pretty big step for a person like me....but I'm still going to give it a try. I'll probably watch it all. Just because once I've started something I rarely give up on it if I make it through the first episode. I like some of those things better than others, obviously, but I'm on episode 4 now and I'm still at least interested.....even if I do think a lot of it is stupid. It's got a bit of potential, and if you read any of my recent/upcoming manga reviews, you'll know I'm in a mood to be forgiving.
Other than these random (generally cynical) comments from the first few episodes, that's all I have to say on the topic. Stay tuned, I'll try to update you on my thoughts as I get a bit further in.
Episode 1 comments:
*WTF is an electromagnetic bucket???*
*Why, all of a sudden, when they're in the midst of battle, does the coloration switch to negative?*
Episode 2 comments:
*GUNDAM=General Unilateral Neuro-link Dispersive Autonomic Maneuver. Way to just put a crap-ton of mechanical sounding words together.*
*Lieutenant Ramius IS a raving bitch. You tell her Kira. You tell her hard.*
