But at least I don't want to die. Cause I may not be too familiar with Eva, but I know enough to know it makes you want to die when all is said and done. Yes well....let's talk RahXephon.
Now mind you all, I don't have a literary analysts mind like my friends do. I really don't pick up things like symbolism well unless they hit me in the face. RahXephon doesn't exactly hit you in the face. But it is good. The end did have me balling up the ends of my pants and gripping the bar on the back of the futon wondering what the hell was going to go on. A few things.
Characters: VERY WELL DONE. They had the same characters I see in Eva......but WAY LESS obnoxious. Sure, there was still angst, and Ayato was still a bitch, but he was better. I do like Shinji though. And ok...so I don't know how things with the characters change as Eva progresses, but I can imagine that Shinji doesn't all of a sudden decide he has to save the world because he loves Misato. Or does he. Maybe he does. I mean he didn't go on the train when Misato went to get him in the beginning when he first ran away. I can say this...I do want to see Misato trying to hit on Shinji in Eva.....just for my own amusement. What I like about RahXephon that Eva doesn't do is the whole story about the past with Ayato and his friends and Haruka and things. And the connections to people in the end were VERY unexpected. They left a few ends open that I think they maybe weren't quite sure how to tie up, but overall it came together nicely. I don't understand it necessarily, but it came together. You could kind of obviously see which characters in RahXephon correspond to which characters in Eva, and they were pretty much the same personalities, but developed much better. I think you'll find that a theme of my review. RahXephon....it's like Eva, but newer with more high tech things. I mean, I may be at a disadvantage with Eva having seen RahXephon first in that of course RahXephon is better....they have better animation techniques and a prototype series to base theirs on. But yet, the two are distinctly different, and I like a lot of what RahXephon adds to flesh out the storyline. Again, it may be that I haven't gotten very deep into Eva and that I'm watching the dub, but RahXephon holds my interest better...it makes me feel emotion and tension and all the things I look for in a series of this kind.
Characters point 2: Megumi keeps getting HOSED. I felt really bad for her. TWICE. Once by her good friend, once by her sister. That BLOWS man. BLOWS. Ok, but I don't want to give too much away in case you haven't seen it yet so I won't go into it too much. I just...I like Megu. And boys screw her over repeatedly.
Characters point 3: Major Souichi Yagumo.....SO CUTE!!! I love him. I want to hug him all the time. He reminds me of a non-ass hole Tohma Seguchi. Like maybe...umm...Tohma + Sakuma or Shuichi + Kohsaka from Genshiken. But personality he's like Tohma but not an ass hole. Just look at him in the link (which is crappy, but do a Google image search too) and see. He's cute.
Characters point 4: Itsuki Kisaragi. OH MY GOD...HOTT!! Yeah. He's sorta minor but sorta not and all sorts of confusing in the end and all sorts of angsty and supposedly in love with his little sister. But look at the link and embrace the hotness. BI-SHOU-NEN!!!
Alright...the Yukino's a girl portion of the review is done. Seriously though, this series is great. The end is great right down to the end. Although (since the Eva I am most familiar with is the End of Eva) it seemed to just BE the end of Eva for a while there. Yeah, I was a little iffy on that part, but it ends differently than the end of Eva. A lot more....happy. A LOT more happy. And there's an episode midway through that truly made me a believer. It involves Ayato and his friend from Tokyo....and the animation and the scene coordination and the direction and the writing and everything is so perfect. Probably one of the best episodes of anime that I have ever seen in my life. Hands down.
Anyway, overall, even though I didn't understand it. This series is AMAZING. The animation is great. The robot fighting isn't really wanky. The end animation with the robots is beautiful. It's drawn well. The story actually has depth. The characters have depth beyond angst. Even though it isn't shoujou and I'm turning into the first public shoujou elitist.....I want to own this series. I want to watch it again someday. And I want to understand it so it will be even better. But.....Yukino says watch. And maybe Yukino will try to download. But not just yet....I need to take a break from it for a bit.
There you have it....RahXephon. And more eloquently put than most of my reviews if I do say so. I'm happy with me. Well on the way to literary analysis and understanding this Asian Canadian prose poetry and other indepth literary things.
